Question: What is a DWI surcharge?

Benson Varghese: When a person is convicted of driving while intoxicated, the Texas Department of Public Safety will receive notification of that conviction. As a result, the person will see surcharges on their driver’s license that they must pay in order to continue to have a driver’s license in Texas. Over the course of three years on a first-time DWI, that is $6,000: $3,000 the first year, 2,000 the next, and $1,000 the third year.
