Williams & Santoni Attorneys at Law
In 2001, Joe Williams and Jane Santoni left their long-time employer, a large insurance conglomerate, which began as USF&G Co and was taken over by The St. Paul Companies. Joe was Managing Attorney for the Maryland area for 16 years. Jane worked there for 14 years and was Senior Trial Counsel.
During their time with the insurer they tried many lawsuits, represented numerous businesses and individuals and learned about the insurance industry and litigation. They handled hundreds of trials, hearings and appeals on insurance, personal injury, workers’ compensation and related issues.
When they formed Williams & Santoni, they decided to represent the other side- the people injured and not the insurance companies or their insureds. There are reasons for that decision. One is that when you win a case for an insurer, you have created a statistic on a balance sheet. On the other hand, when you win a case for a person, you have created a better life and made a huge difference for a person who really needed help. It is a wonderful feeling to shake a client’s hand and hand them a check they desperately need.
The firm started out handling personal injury cases, different situations in which a person was hurt or killed by negligence. We represent people injured in car accidents, at work, by a defective product, by medical negligence and nursing home neglect. Largely these cases deal with negligence, that is, the failure to act reasonably, and one common issue is insurance.
Negligence cases may appear to be simple, and sometimes they are. Often, however, there are complicated insurance coverage issues, and we use our experience representing insurers to help our clients.
We are very fortunate to have as ‘of-counsel’ to the firm M. Bradley Hallwig, a very highly respected attorney who has tried many cases on insurance and related issues and has represented many insurers in coverage and related cases. Over his 35-year career, Brad has handled complex medical malpractice, product liability and toxic tort cases, as well as motor vehicle accidents and premises litigation.
