Approbate

Definition - What does Approbate mean?

The term approbate is mostly used with "reprobate," and together they mean to accept and reject. Approbate also means “that which I approve, I can’t disapprove.” Approbate and reprobate are often associated with wills. A person can't accept the will by only accepting one part of it, which is beneficial to the person; and rejecting the other, which might be beneficial to someone else.

Justipedia explains Approbate

This can be explained with the following example: consider a testator who gives his property to a certain person and gives that person’s property to another. In this case, the first person is not at liberty to accept the part of the will where he gets the property from the testator, nor to reject when it comes to giving his or her property to the third person.
