Definition - What does Character Evidence mean?

Character evidence can be defined as the attestations or proof of a person’s moral standing, traits, general nature, reputation, etc., among the general community.

In criminal cases, the defendant might ask a person to give a testimony about their good character in the court with an aim to lower the possibilities of a conviction. Such a person is known as character witness. This person must be know the defendant well at the time the crime took place.
