Definition - What does Accident mean?
An accident is an occurrence that is not planned and that has the effect of creating a loss or hurt. By legal definition, it is not something done with intent. If, through an accident, a law is broken, such as running a stop sign while in the middle of a collision, the person would not be held liable for not stopping at the sign because not doing so was the result of an unintended incident.
Justipedia explains Accident
There are different levels of legal liability that can be brought when an accident occurs and the result is a broken law; if the accident occurred due to neglect on the part of the person, then it would be considered legally more serious than an accident that occurred while a person was following all known laws.
