Definition - What does Dispute Resolution mean?
Dispute resolution is all the means for resolving a case, claim or conflict that courts of law will officially recognize. Because courts themselves often engage in a form of dispute resolution, these other means for resolving a case are sometimes called "alternative dispute resolutions."
Courts will often encourage parties in a case to seek dispute resolution outside the courtroom (if possible).
Justipedia explains Dispute Resolution
The entire litigation process takes a great amount of time and material resources before a case is resolved, so courts often prefer to see parties try to achieve dispute resolution in a manner other than a verdict from a jury or a ruling from the bench.
In divorce cases, for example, many jurisdictions refuse to enter final judgments until the parties have made significant and good faith efforts to come to an agreement through alternative dispute resolution processes.
