Sports Law

Definition - What does Sports Law mean?

Sports law refers to the collection of legal rules and regulations that govern the world of sports—primarily professional sports. These laws can include regulations about franchising, drug tests, sports-related torts, contracts, antitrust and others.

People who work in the sports industry are required to comply with sports law or else they could face legal consequences.

Justipedia explains Sports Law

The use of performance-enhancing drugs is one area of sports law that is taken extremely seriously. This is because using these drugs is essentially cheating, and can void the integrity of a sporting competition. Athletes or sports teams who are found guilty of using performance-enhancing drugs can face fines and other legal consequences. It can also have serious detrimental effects on an athlete's career. For example, when it was discovered that Lance Armstrong used performance-enhancing drugs in cycling competitions, his career suffered greatly.
