Definition - What does Vacate mean?

To vacate is to leave a place of residence. This term is used both for commercial and residential property. In order for a landlord to get a tenant out of their home or commercial property, the landlord must pursue an eviction process that is determined by state and federal law. The time frame is different based on the length of stay and type of occupation. The formal act of leaving the building is called vacate.

There are many reasons why a landlord can get a tenant to vacate. In some cases, a court order to immediately vacate can be gained. In a case where notice was given to the person and the person did not adhere to the notice, they could be forced to vacate immediately with the help of the police through enforcement of a court order.
