A widow is a woman that survives the death of her husband. This is a legal designation in cases relating to pensions and insurance policies. It is a commonly used term to refer to a woman when she outlives her husband. This only relates to the death of a spouse and not a divorce.

In many instances, there is a financial gain to a surviving wife of a man who has a pension policy from working especially if the man was the sole wage earner. The woman is entitled to draw upon the dead husband's pension; that entitlement is referred to as a widow's pension. There are government related benefits and social security benefits that can change in amount when a husband dies and the designation used in those instances is the same.
