Justipedia explains Employment

Employment is critical for anyone who wants to make a living by working. One can become employed by applying for a job and being hired by an employer. One can also be self-employed, which is essentially the state of working for oneself or running one's own business.

Whether or not one is employed has many consequences both legally and financially. Employment status determines whether or not a person is qualified for certain government programs. It also largely determines how much money a person can earn.
