Definition - What does Trade mean?

Trade refers to the act of a business exchange that includes a person or business buying or selling goods and/or services for money. A person or business can perform a trade where a good is exchanged for a good, a service is exchanged for a service, a service is exchanged for a good, etc.

Nearly any and all exchanges of goods and/or services for money are considered a trade. For an exchange to be considered a trade, there is no “sophistication” requirement in order to determine whether something is a trade or not. So, just as purchasing a $1 million dollar home is considered a trade, so is buying a drink or a snack from the vending machine in the break room. Trade is an important part of the United States economic system.
