A survey is a process that is done to determine the exact size of a parcel of land. A survey of a parcel of land results in a document, known as a report, that describes the quantity of land as well as distances and courses of the land. A survey can also refer to the examination of a home.

A survey of a home may be done to allow an insurance company to insure a home. A survey may also be done to protect the seller of a parcel of land from any disputes as to boundaries of the land. A survey report generally includes the quantity and location of the land, any improvements made to the land, any encumbrances that are attached to the land, as well as a description of the location of adjacent properties.
