John focuses his practice in the area of criminal law and often represents defendants charged with white collar crimes, including health care fraud, tax fraud, mail fraud, and antitrust violations. He regularly practices in both state and federal courts. John has litigated numerous cases involving First Amendment issues and media-related disputes. He argued before the Supreme Court of the United States in Marshall v. Lonberger, 459 U.S. 422, 103 S.Ct. 843.
John has achieved an AV Preeminent Rating from Martindale-Hubbell. He is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, and he has been recognized by his peers for over twenty years in annual editions of The Best Lawyers in America in the areas of “Criminal Defense: Non-White-Collar,” and “Criminal Defense: White-Collar and Litigation – First Amendment.” In 2013, John was named “Toledo Best Lawyers’ 2013 Lawyer of the Year Criminal Defense: White Collar.” In 2011, John was named “Toledo Best Lawyer of the Year 2011 Criminal Defense: Non-White-Collar.” He additionally is listed in annual editions of Ohio Super Lawyers. John has been a life member of the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference since 1975, and he received The University of Toledo Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2007.
