Matt was born in Kettering, Ohio. He left his home town in 1989 to attend Tulane University on a basketball scholarship. During his summers in college, Matt gained valuable experience as he was employed as a deckhand aboard tugs in the Gulf of Mexico. He was a Jones Act seaman, and worked with drilling rigs and barges, and also worked in a shipyard.
After completing his Tulane undergraduate studies, Matt attended law school at the Tulane School of Law. Upon graduating, Matt went to work for Harry Connick, Sr. at the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office as an assistant district attorney. He tried 38 jury trials and 69 judge trials. Matt then moved to and obtained his license to practice law in New York. He worked for a downtown Manhattan admiralty firm that focused on marine cargo recovery claims, defending seaman’s personal injury claims, and inland insurance claims.
